HOW W.O.B BEGAN

I’ve been asked several times, “What compelled you to write this story? Why Solis and her world over anything else?” Well, there’s a few answers to that.
We Outlawed Bloodlines was not the first novel I wrote. Growing up, I was a fan of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Percy made me fall in love with reading, considering I didn’t really care for it when I was younger. Percy, being the same age as me at the time, really helped pull me into the story on a personal level. I was twelve-years-old when I picked up The Lightning Thief. In fact, The Lost Hero was just being published when I first got into the series. In a small way, it was almost like I was growing up with Percy.
Why is this relevant to my writing? Well, besides the fact I had always wanted to write a book, the first “book” I ever actually sat down and wrote was a twenty-chapter Percy-Jackson-knock-off with Canadian characters. Right! It was horribly written given I was fourteen (maybe thirteen) and inexperienced at writing at the time. Of course, with the ideas not entirely my own, I knew I could never publish. But it was a perfectly fine first project to start learning how to write.
So, I started thinking about my own ideas.
By the time I was fifteen and in high school, I knew I wanted to come up with something of my own. One day, me and some friends at the time were sitting together for lunch, talking about a PC game we all played, League of Legends. Yes, we all knew about League long before Netflix’s Arcane came out. I absolutely loved the first season, and must admit that my favourite character from the show is Jinx, without a doubt. In highschool I enjoyed playing the game from time to time. I even remember when Vi’s champion was released. Though, I was never good at playing Vi or Jinx. My best champions were Ashe and Lux for someone who didn't play to competitively.
Again, why relevant? Because one day when me and my friends were bored, two of us decided to create champions of our own, which included artwork, powers, and lore. We spent a few days coming up with our champions, and another friend rated our work, gave us scores on the artwork, powers and lore . . . AND WE TIED! It was pretty funny. But after our little contest was over, I looked at the character I had created and her world/lore I had made.
Here, by accident, was the basis for my new story idea:
Luna Amador from the world of Gorn. I still have the artwork of Luna and her horse, Libero, somewhere.
Not what you were expecting to hear? "What about WE OUTLAWED BLOODLINES?" Don't worry, we're getting there. Solis's story was not the first I came up with in the world of Gorn.
From age fifteen-sixteen, I wrote Luna’s story, set in the same world as Solis, but two-thousand years ahead of Solis’s time. In fact, Solis was not the first character, or even the tenth I created in this universe. Originally, Solis was part of a two-thousand year old legend Luna learned about, including what Solis did for her city. The city of Theatis. (Though, Theatis did have a different name at the time, which was, Cor. Heart, in Latin. This is where the kingdom of Corlan came from. The heart of the story. In fact, many of you will notice several Latin meanings/phrases/names across the story, as it is the base language I used when creating the fictional language of the world, Alvarion).
Eventually, I finished writing Luna’s story and left it sitting for a long time. I was sixteen-seventeen, and I didn’t really know what to do afterwards in terms of publishing, but I knew I wanted to keep writing. With that, I looked deeper into the story I already had. The one about an outlaw named Solis and her family of thieves, and began writing the first draft of We Outlawed Bloodlines. Starting right at the beginning with Solis abandoned in the woods. If only I knew at the time how much this story would grow and what it would turn into, because I can guarantee you that We Outlawed Bloodlines is only the first book in this upcoming series, and Solis’s fate in her world isn't even the beginning of this epic, blight-casted adventure.
I hope readers enjoy the first book and the start of Solis’s journey. For I can promise you, war and battle and the twists of time itself are yet to come. The only question left for you is . . . what does that have to do with Solis?
. . .
That concludes this post with Vic Massey about her upcoming fantasy novel, We Outlawed Bloodlines. Stick around for future posts about the map of the world, kingdoms and more! But first, the characters.
