Who is Ezek and why is his Kingdom of Origin unknown?
It’s hard to answer who Ezek is when Ezek doesn’t know himself. In fact, his name isn’t even Ezek. That’s the alias he first came up with after waking up on a Corlan beach with no memory of who he is. Without any memory, how could Ezek possibly know where his home is? What kingdom he’s from? There are small differences between him and the people of Theatis, such as the slight variation in his skin colour and his dialect, yet these aren’t very noticeable to those not paying attention. He constantly seeks where he belongs, reaching out for anything to remind him of home … but he hardly gets the chance to try when the people who took him in and gave him a home come to need him the most.
What is Ezek’s purpose in the story over the events of book one?
Ezek is wedged into a unique situation. As the threat of a new poison rises under the kingdom’s radar, Ezek dives deep into helping a character named Rivera as she tries to figure out what this poison is and how to fight it. Neither Rivera nor any other healer has seen this gruelling poison before, and mages won’t go near it. When the person nearest to him is attacked and poisoned by the same substance, Ezek stops at nothing to get the ingredients for a cure. Even if that means fighting for it.
How did Ezek end up in Corlan?
Ezek first wakes on a beach he doesn’t recognize, covered in sand and someone else’s blood. None of his ragged, oversized clothes fit properly. The only thing that fits perfectly are his boots. He looks around for a house or a shipwreck, or any indication of how he ended up on that beach, but finds nothing. In this story, the reader will have to discover Ezek’s past alongside him.
What is Ezek’s true character like if he doesn’t know who he is?
That’s a good question. As Ezek stumbles around Theatis, he finds himself repulsed by the attitudes of the highborn. He sees the lack of respect and morals, and he refuses to be a part of it. In the lowlands of the city, where the majority of farmers and the lesser folk live by their fields, Ezek finds himself much more “at home” around the kindness of strangers. He’s polite, hardworking, inclined to help those who need it, and absolutely disgusted by the slaveowners in the higher districts of the city. A mad desire ignites in him to set them free, as he truly believes no soul should live a life in chains … but there’s nothing he can do. Not for all the slaves in this city, nor underneath it.
Underneath it? What do you mean?
I’ll hand that off to our next character post on outlaw #4, Concordia Fortuna, and the unofficial fifth district of Theatis where she’s from, the Underground.
